Turkey has appeared in five FIFA World Cup tournaments so far, with their first appearance being in 1954. Their best performance came in the 2002 World Cup held in South Korea and Japan, where they finished in 3rd place, becoming one of the surprises of that tournament. This was achieved under the management of Şenol Güneş, who guided the team through a tough group phase, defeating heavyweights such as Japan, South Korea, and Italy, before losing in the semi-finals to eventual winners Brazil. This performance still remains Turkey's best ever result in the World Cup. In the most recent 2018 World Cup held in Russia, Turkey did not qualify, finishing 4th in their qualifying group behind Iceland, Croatia, and Ukraine.
